Low carbon workplace at Summit House

Commercial buildings are responsible for a significant percentage of London’s carbon admissions, but it has only been in the last few years that the environmental agenda has been at the forefront of office design. Since BREEAM first launched back in 1990 its relevance has grown in stature, and, combined with SKA, now sets the benchmarks enabling the industry to push for change.

Sustainable and environmentally friendly properties are now commonplace in London and new builds receive well deserved credit for complying with eco-friendly restrictions. However, simply applauding the efficiency of our latest constructions is not enough. Substantial carbon reductions are needed across the whole of the capital if any progress is to be made.

low carbon workplace

What got us onto the topic of carbon emissions in the capital was the news of Low Carbon Workspaces latest project at Summit House. This refurbishment job, carried out by Willmott Dixon, is a great example of an old building ‘going green’. This follows their recent success at Mansel House in Wimbledon, redeveloping the 1960’s building making it 50% more energy efficient than equivalent properties.

Some of the passive green features incorporated in Summit House’s design include low emissivity coating, infrared sensors, and pipes designed to transfer heat from parts of the building that need cooling to parts that need heating and vice versa.

This rise in environmental awareness comes at an important time. There is more investment into low carbon structures than ever, and this has been driven by tenant demand and valuation benefits.

When completed in August 2016 we’re sure that Summit House is going to be bright on the radar of tech companies looking to grab exciting space near Silicon Roundabout.
