Slate Coffee

Slate Coffee

School's out for summer at Slate Coffee

Here at Shoreditch Office Space, we enjoy the finer things in life. Sipping a refreshing Camden Pale Ale as the sun sets on Boxpark, a chilled Sauvignon atop the Queen of Hoxton, an 80-year old bourbon over ice in the Nightjar.

Alas, our pleasure inevitably leads to painful mornings. So imagine our delight when we discovered Slate Coffee on our doorstep: the newest edition to Shoreditch’s increasingly impressive range of independent coffee houses.

Owner Zoey Henderson took some time out to talk about the venture, and why Shoreditch is the perfect place to start a new business. Like many new start-ups in the area, Slate Coffee has quickly embedded itself in the Shoreditch community.

The interior is furnished with stylish reclaimed school furniture while the walls display eccentric graffiti art with its own back story. Zoey recruited artists from ‘Somewhere to’, a charity that helps young people find platforms for their artwork. The psychedelic graphics compliment Slate’s quirky interior – a refreshing blend of a Year 8 science lesson and an art gallery.

Owner Zoey and Slate's unique interior

Despite living in the gloomy hinterlands that we hear exist south of the river, Slate’s owner is something of a Shoreditch fanatic. “I love it in East London, but I couldn’t live here. There’s always something I want to do – I’d be at raves on a Tuesday night!” Give it a month and we’re sure the lure of Shoreditch will have Zoey flat hunting in EC1.

Shoreditch Office Space is always interested in start-up and property stories, and to learn what draws new companies to our area. Even better when those start-ups are able to provide us with delicious beverages! Slate is a perfect example of the entrepreneurial, start-up mentality that swept through East London following the emergence of Tech City.
