Village Hall Launch: Proving That Shoreditch Works

Last night signalled the official opening of Shoreditch Works’ eagerly anticipated Village Hall. This morning’s hangover signals it was a success.

The Hoxton Square space has opened its doors to the community with the aim of offering event space, not only to the vast number of companies clamouring for it in East London, but also to the broader Hackney community.

20% of the events that are to be hosted at the Village Hall will be held by organisations who would otherwise be unable to benefit from such a venue. Charities, non-profit organisations and community initiatives will all have the chance to apply for free use of the space.

The hope is that the Shoreditch Works Village Hall will become a focal point for community activity, with an emphasis on outreaching to traditionally disengaged groups. Speaking at the launch last night, Shoreditch Works’ James Governor highlighted some of the fantastic groups that are helping to promote greater community involvement.

#TechMums, for example, is an exciting new project from The GoTo Foundation that gives mums an introduction to the tech skills needed to make their way in the digital and business world. Organisations like these will now have access to Shoreditch Works’ event space, providing the venue and technologies that would otherwise be financially unobtainable.

Shoreditch Works have a track record of engaging with the local community, both within Tech City and further afield. We visited their Scrutton Street space last month during an outreach scheme, Code Club, to get local kids programming. There are few things more inspiring/demoralising than having an 8-year old trying to explain coding concepts that are, quite simply, beyond our comprehension.

Following supportive speeches from TCIO’s Juliette Morgan and Hackney Council’s Cabinet Member for Regeneration Guy Nicholson, guests were invited to explore the space, mingle and enjoy the variety of refreshments on offer. Unfortunately for today’s productivity levels, we did.

Shoreditch Office Space were delighted to be able to help Shoreditch Works locate and secure their new Hoxton Square Village Hall space. While it is always a pleasure to help a client find the perfect location, there is an additional pleasure in seeing the building being put to such fantastic use.
